The Airport Emergency Response Driving course (A-ERD) provides advanced/defensive and emergency response driving skills, knowledge and understanding required to drive a vehicle safely under emergency response conditions while responding to an incident Airside.
Additionally, the course offers four optional landside public road response units, which include advanced driving response, emergency lights and sirens response, road speed response and high-speed response.
The training is based on the following regulations and standards:
- The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Airport Services Manual Part 1 Rescue and Fire Fighting 14.4 Handling of Vehicles.
- The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Framework for the competence of rescue & firefighting service (RFFS) personnel CAP 699 Unit: AFF2 Site & position fire service vehicles at accident sites.
- National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1010/1002 Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications. Chapter 4.
- The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) UAE CAR PART XI Aerodrome emergency services, facilities and equipment. Appendix 2: RFFS Training 3.4.17 Appliance driving.
- European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) GM1 ADR.OPS.B.010 (a) (3) Training of Rescue and Firefighting Personnel.

Pre-entry Requirements
The course is designed for drivers who hold a full valid driving licence for the vehicle category/pathway used on the course.
Course Structure
The course provides the learner with the opportunity to complete mandatory ERD units 1 and ERD unit 2; they must also select and complete a minimum of one vehicle class pathway unit/s that best meets the vehicle/s type to be driven.
A learner may select one of the four optional units depending on their operational policy when responding to an incident landside on the public road.
